Switching To The New FineDine Printer App
Before you start
- Pick a quiet time. Not during service. Allow about 15 minutes.
- Use the computer the printers are connected to. It is the one running your current printer server program.
- Take a screenshot of your printer settings. In the FineDine Dashboard, open the Printers list and note each printer's name, which one is the default, and which categories or items have a special printer. You will need this in Steps 4 and 5.
- Allow program installs. On Windows, you need permission to install programs. If the PC is managed by your company, ask your IT contact to be available.
- Keep your internet connection on. You will download the new app and sign in.
Step 1: Uninstall the current printer server program
Do this first, so the old and new programs never print the same ticket twice.
- Close the current printer server program (PrintNode) if it is open. Right-click its icon near the clock and choose Exit or Quit.
- Open the Control Panel. Click Start, type Control Panel, and press Enter.
- Click Programs, then Programs and Features (or Uninstall a program).
- Find the printer server program in the list (PrintNode).
- Click it once, then click Uninstall at the top of the list.
- Follow the prompts and click Yes or Next until it finishes.
- Check that it no longer appears in the list.
On a Mac, quit the program, then drag it from Applications to the Bin.
Step 2: Install the new printer app from your Dashboard
- Sign in to the FineDine Dashboard.
- Go to Marketplace, then My Integrations.
- Open Printer Integration and click Configure.
- On the Configure page, download the new printer app for your computer (Windows or Mac). Keep the Info tab open: it shows the email and password you will need to sign in.
- Install it.
- Windows: run the downloaded file. If a blue "Windows protected your PC" window appears, click More info, then Run anyway.
- Mac: open the downloaded file, drag FineDine Print into Applications, then open it from Applications.
- Leave the app open when the installation finishes.
Step 3: Sign in and turn off printers you don't use
- In the new app, sign in with the email and password from the Info tab on the Configure page.
- The app lists every printer it finds on this computer. This often includes printers you never use, such as "Microsoft Print to PDF", fax, or old office printers.
- Switch on only the printers your venue prints tickets on (kitchen, bar, receipt printer, and so on).
- Switch off every other printer. This stops unnecessary printers from showing up in your Dashboard.
- Check that the printers you use say Online in the app.
Step 4: Select your default printer
The default printer prints every ticket that has no special printer assigned. Set it again so the new app uses the right one.
- In the FineDine Dashboard, go back to Marketplace, My Integrations, Printer Integration, Configure.
- Open the Printers list. Your printers now appear, each showing Online.
- Choose the printer you used as the default before (check your screenshot) and set it as the default printer.
- Save.
Step 5: Assign special printers to categories and items
Do this only if some categories or items printed on a different printer before. For example, drinks on the bar printer or desserts on the pastry printer.
- Look at your screenshot from the start and list each category or item that had its own printer.
- In the Dashboard, open each of those categories or items.
- Under the printer setting, choose the printer it should print on.
- Save, then repeat for every category and item on your list.
- Anything with no special printer will print on the default printer from Step 4.
Only choose printers you left switched on in Step 3. A switched-off printer will not appear, and tickets sent to it will not print.
Step 6: Test that everything prints
- In the Dashboard Printers list, click Test print for each printer. Each one should print one test ticket.
- Place a test order that includes items from each special category.
- Check that every ticket prints once, on the right printer.
- Leave the new app open and stop the computer from going to sleep. If the app is closed or the computer sleeps, the printers show Offline and tickets are not printed.
Troubleshooting:
| Error | Solution |
|---|---|
| A printer shows Offline | Open the new app and stop the computer from sleeping. |
| An extra printer appears in the Dashboard | Switch it off in the app, or contact support. Do not assign it to any category or item. |
| A Star printer prints nothing or garbage | In the app, set Printer language to Star raster. |
| Windows blocks the installer | Right-click the file, choose Properties, tick Unblock, click OK, then run it again. |
| The app says the printer subscription has expired | Contact support to renew it, then sign in again. |
Still stuck? In the app click Copy diagnostics and send it to FineDine support with your venue name and the time of the problem.
